Egel Brilliant In Perez Memorial At Sungold Stadium

Adelaide’s Matt Egel produced a storybook finish to the All Stars Tyson Perez Memorial when he dominated the 31 lap A-main following a perfect evening that saw the 27 year old set quick time in qualifying and then win both his heat races and the A Dash. It was an emotional win for Egel who spent time with Perez in the US while Egel’s car owner Tony Bartlett was also heavily involved with Perez.

Egel jumped to the lead in the Heytesbury Stockfeeds backed ahead of local ace Darren Mollenoyux on what was a freshly reworked surface following a seemingly usual shower of rain crossed the venue mid event.

American Travis Rilat slotted quickly into third ahead of former local Chris Ackland, Darren Hickman and All Stars Sprintcar Series champion Harley Bishop rounding out the top 5.

While Mollenoyux was within striking distance of the leader it was Bishop who mounted the first serious challenge as he firstly went around Hickman before going under Ackland and then putting a move on Rilat for third. Unfortunately Bishop and Rilat got together ultimately sending the pair into the wall in turn 4 and to the rear of the field when they both required a second push start.

At the restart Mollenoyux challenged Egel for the lead exiting turn 4 and got loose off the bottom and eventually lost second to Ackland.

With Egel cruising out in front the talented South Australian crossed the line for a popular $3,000 win in the prestigious event.

Ackland would hold off Mollenoyux for the runner up finish ahead of the Eureka Sprintcar Series champion with Hickman maintaining a solid fourth place finish.

Fifth home was Shane Heathcote ahead of Keke Falland, Phil Lock, Michael Phillips, Tony Moule, Michael Cunningham, Chris Evans and Sam Putland rounding out the finishers.

John Vogels was a non-starter in the final despite qualifying third due to a possible engine issue. Brad Foster also finished infield as did Rilat, Bishop, Craig Vanderstelt and Tim Van Ginneken.

Moule won the B-main ahead of Falland, Putland, Phillips, Evans and Van Ginneken as all six drivers advanced to the back of the A-main.

Heat race wins went to Egel, Mollenoyux and Bishop in the first round while Egel, Rilat and Hickman were victorious in the second round heats.

Reigning national Street Stock champion Brad McClure scored the win in the Twin feature event that saw the field complete the first 15 laps in the clockwise direction before switching directions mid race.

McClure was superb as he led home Mick Clark and Mark Gartner who was also the winner of the R&M Security heat race bonus. The local security company put $500 up for a random heat race winner and Gartner was victorious in heat 3 and as a result won the cash bonus.

Other Street Stock heat race winners included McClure and John Roycroft.

Also on the program were the V8 Dirt Modified’s with the feature win going to Steve Milthorpe in record time ahead of Mick Kiraly and Trevor Perry. Kiraly and Milthorpe shared the heat race wins in the class.

With the current season officially drawing to a close, the Premier Speedway club is already focused on the 2012/2013 season that includes the 41st Lucas Oil Products Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic and the 2013 Australian Wingless Sprint national title.
