Green's Easter Win At Sungold Stadium

Warrnambool’s fickle weather wreaked havoc on the final leg of the Easter Sprintcar Trail last night at Sungold Stadium yet despite the obvious hurdles a good portion of the crowd were finally rewarded with a feature race. With four rain delays, numerous attempts to rework the track and many hot laps by both Super Rod and Sprintcars the 30 lap A-main was finally run and won by popular South Australian Trevor Green. Green staved off mid race attacks from Jamie Veal who cross the line second ahead of emerging star Daniel Pestka in third.

By virtue of the lateness of the hour and the persistent showers, the C and B mains were cancelled following the heat races and the A-main was the major concern. The easy option would have been to abandon the entire event following another deluge at 11pm however with Steven Lines on the verge of a possible $10,000 bonus should he win his third consecutive A-main of the Easter Trail, plus the Parr Motorsports and GF1 Chassis Sprintcar track championship also on the line and more importantly the paying fans on the hill, management made the decision to forge ahead and the decision proved to be the right one.

Green, the 1997 Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic winner jumped to the lead over fellow front row occupant Jamie Veal on both starts which proved to be the decisive move of the race considering the wickedly quick nature of the surface following the rain.

With the original start halted when defending Easter Sprintcar trail overall winner and third starting Shaun Dobson drifted high in turn 3 and was collected by a luckless, yet quick Nick Lacey. Both drivers were eliminated from the 30 lap final.

With Green motoring out in front it was left to those behind to see if they could manufacture anything to catch the speedy leader.

The first to try was fourth starting Steven Lines who blew through into second on turn 1 only to drift high allowing Veal and sixth starting Daniel Pestka through on his inside. Lines left nothing on the table as he desperately tried to get back by Pestka yet the $10,000 bonus slipped away with every lap.

The only stoppage was for Eddie Lumbar who rolled in turn 4 with 12 laps remaining, Eddie walked away from the crash scene.

Green powered away from Veal at the restart and would go on to record a popular win as he beat home Veal, Pestka and Lines who would still win the overall Easter Sprintcar Trail.

Queensland’s Brent Aprile finished an impressive fifth ahead of Darren Mollenoyux, Shane Stewart, James McFadden, Dennis Jones and Jeremy Cross in tenth. John Vogels, Max Dumesny and Glen Sutherland were the only other finishers with Brett Milburn and Kurt Luttrell coming infield during the race.

With his strong finish, Steven Lines also wrapped up back to back Sprintcar track championships and for his efforts receives the GF1 Chassis and Panel Kit courtesy of Parr Motorsports and GF1 Chassis.

Earlier in the evening everyone had high hopes of a great night with the event proudly presented by Advanced Coating Services. The track was wide and racy and the weather looked to be favourable until midway through the heat races Mother Nature took over and let everyone know who was in control.

Camden Neon Signs Quick Time was won by Steven Lines who showed no mercy as he lapped the venue in a stunning 10.4 seconds and comfortably set the fastest time.

From there Lines looked impressive as he sped to the opening heat race win ahead of McFadden and Max Dumesny in a clean and entertaining race.

Heat two was a carbon copy for the American Shane Stewart as he showed impressive speed to win from Green and Dubbo’s Jeremy Cross. Taylor Johnson brought the red lights on when she tagged the wall in turn 3 while Kris Lacey knocked the front end out of his #16 when he bumped the unforgiving wall in turn 2.

Nick Lacey showed his best form of the season to finish ahead of Pestka and Veal in the third heat of the night as Brent Aprile and Garry Brazier rounded out the top five.

Matthew Reed showed great car speed to take the lead away from livewire Shaun Dobson in heat 4 only to be repassed by Dobson and then a fireball erupted when an oil fitting came loose on the engine spewing oil onto the headers sending Reed infield and out of the event. Dobson would go on to win the race from David Murcott and Stephen Bell in third.

Sydney’s Matt Young used the highline to outrun Mark House in the fifth heat however it was the stirring run from Trevor Green from eleventh to third that got everyone’s attention.

Almost an hour was lost before heat six could be won by Phil Lock ahead of John Baynes and Kris Lacey in third. With track conditions dramatically different Shane Stewart finished eighth ahead of McFadden and Dumesny in tenth!

Another hour and a half was lost before heat 7 could be won by Jackson Delamont ahead of Quentin Tanner and Kurt Luttrell. David Murcott bumped the wall and had to come infield dropping valuable points.

Heat 8 produced a wild wreck that involved Carl Ludeman and Victorian champion Stephen Bell who vaulted through the air following the contact. Dobson was left with nowhere to go and also sustained wing damage although he still managed to restart. Steve Ellis led until gear linkage failure sent him to the infield as Eddie Lumbar eventually went on to win from Glen Sutherland and ninth starting Jamie Veal.

Premier Speedway management praised the efforts of the Super Rod competitors who hot lapped the venue in an attempt to get the Sprintcar A-main completed.

Sadly both the Super Rods and the Wingless Sprints couldn’t complete their respective programs yet state champ Geoff Leigh and Paul O’Shannassy managed to win Super Rod Heats while Kane Newcombe, Mark Balcombe and Jye Saunders did likewise in the Wingless Sprints.

Sungold Stadium now looks forward to the Tyson Perez Memorial 360 Sprintcar event that will be run on April 21.
