A superb field of 44 Sprintcars are set to contest the 2010 Victorian Sprintcar Title at Warrnambool's Sungold Stadium this Saturday night, March 13. Fresh from an impressive run recently at the Krikke Boys event at Bunbury, defending champion Matthew Reed returns to Warrnambool where a stout field from every state in Australia is set to compete.
Taking the reigns of the Trevor Green owned ADRAD Radiators #4 during the Krikke Boys event enabled Reed to continue his focus on running with the highest level of competition in the country. A six time Eureka Sprintcar Series champion, multiple and defending Avalon Raceway track champion and of course reigning Victorian Sprintcar champ, Reed’s motivation to compete at the highest level is evident.
“It was great to run with the best drivers in the business again in Bunbury and that’s what I have wanted to do this season,” said Reed.
“Trevor gave me a great car and we had a pretty good run and at one stage I was running third behind Sammy (Swindell) and Jason Johnson.”
“I am definitely at that stage in my career that I want to run with the best guys week in week out and that’s what gets me excited about going Sprintcar racing.”
Reed also subbed for Jason Johnson in Brisbane earlier this season for the opening round of World Series Sprintcars where he recorded a solid top 10 result. Stepping out of the Victory Lane Racegear #88 just prior to Christmas allowed Reed to step back into his familiar #92 for a majority of the season ahead of last weekends Krikke Boys race driving for Green. It’s quite possible that Reed could pursue a full time drive for a car owner in the future should the right circumstances arise following his recent impressive performances.
It seems everyone wants to run Warrnambool with the famed high banks providing some memorable events this season as another quality field is set to contest the Victorian Sprintcar Title. Now based in WA, Robbie Farr heads the list of nominations while Farr’s eight A-main victories this summer sees him once again as the form driver as he is also coming off a runner up finish in the World Series Sprintcars championship to winner Brooke Tatnell.
Popular young gun James McFadden was the best performed Australian Sprintcar driver at the most recent Sungold Stadium WSS event when he finished fifth behind a quartet of touring American’s in January. That night McFadden bettered the likes of Tatnell and Farr as the Alice Springs native makes his bid for the Victorian Title. David Murcott and Grant Anderson return from WSS duties while SA champ Steven Lines will also return from a recent stint in WA in recent weeks.
Last summer Matthew Reed defeated Lines with Trevor Green in third. Despite injuring his back in Toowoomba during a WSS round in November, Trevor has travelled the continent in recent months ensuring major sponsor ADRAD Radiators continues to gain national exposure. Securing the services of American legend Danny Smith for the majority of the summer and in more recent times Matthew Reed for the Krikke Boys event, Trevor has once again sought the services of one of Australia’s top Sprintcar stars for this weekends Victorian title.
“Ryan Farrell will be driving this weekend,” said Trevor as he continued, “I would have kept Matt (Reed) in it but he has to drive for his own people down there so Luch Monte has let Ryan come over and run for us.”
Farrell, a six time WA Sprintcar champion is no stranger to Warrnambool having competed with Monte Motorsports this season as they contested all the major events including the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic with a stellar third place finish.
“It was a opportunity to go down this weekend and we had some tires left over that we didn’t use at the Classic so we thought we would come down,” said Trevor.
“I think Luch knows how much I have missed racing this year and I reckon that’s why he is letting Ryan drive for me this weekend, it’s good of him to do it that’s for sure,” said the appreciative racer turned car owner.
Sitting on the sidelines hasn’t been easy for Trevor who for the past 10 seasons has been at the forefront of Australian Sprintcar racing. Multiple Parramatta City Raceway Track Championships plus numerous trips to the US to compete during the Australian off-season has seen Green as one of the busiest drivers in recent years.
“It hasn’t been pleasant watching let me tell you, you don’t realise how much you miss it until your not doing it that’s for sure.”
Locals Jamie Veal, Darren Mollenoyux and Stephen Bell are the leading contenders from Warrnambool while Simpson’s John Vogels also stands a good chance as he currently leads the Eureka Sprintcar Series standings.
This Saturday night’s event will also carry Eureka Series points following the washout of the November round set to be decided at Warrnambool. With $5,000 going to the winner of the state title the winner will certainly be deserving with the caliber of drivers coming from across the country.
Joining the Sprintcars on the program will be the Junior Sedans as they contest the annual Williams/Yeoman Memorial event. The leading young guys and girls in the category will race alongside many of their heroes as the Junior Sedans share the billing on a huge night for Sungold Stadium.
